As for your other questions:
If you get a preamp, and put it directly into your interface, you need to make sure that it is specifically a phono preamp. If it is a phono pre, it will work just fine. Although phono preamps are nothing special per-se, they have a special equalization characteristic known as R.I.A.A. EQ. (recording industry association of America). Due to the limitations of cutting vinyl, the RIAA standardized an EQ curve that allowed the groves on the vinyl to take up less space. All phono pre-amps have this EQ curve. If you use any old preamp (It doesn’t matter if it’s a Behringer or an Avalon) the records will sound weird at best.
As for software, it really depends on what type of manipulation your looking to do. If you want a sampler or sequencer, Reason is nice for sampling music and making/manipulating loops and midi, I use Logic for some of my more advanced wav manipulation (pitch correction mostly on live recordings), I use Samplatude for my windows based system to record and EQ, and I use Pro-tools on my Mac system. Some people swear by pro-tools, I only use it because people request it. I prefer the Samplitude.

your going to be putting on some cash if this is the setup you want. if you want to do it right i would suggest buying some Technics 1200′s(kinda pricey but worth the cost) then get yourself a mixer, Numark has some really good mixes as well as Rane. get an M-Audio interface and finally final scratch.
trust me dont try and go cheap on anything cause in the end you’ll end up regretting it.
What you will need to DJ straight from your laptop is a USB Digital Media Controller. Digital Media Controllers are essentially two turntables and a mixer all constructed into a single unit.

You just plug one into are uSB (or sometimes midi) port, the controller will control any DJing software you might have in your laptop or desktop PC.
For a low budget bedroom practice setup:
I would suggest that you pick up the Numark total Control. It’s not the best unit on the planet, but it’s cheap ($ 250 or £150 – probably less on Ebay) and pretty effective at the same time.
It usually comes bundled with some free DJ software too, so you wont need to purchase any software too.
Plug in install and play.
For a decent budget set up (good for small gigs)
You could pick up either the Vestax VCi-100 (the most popular midi controller to date) which is easily one of the best controllers in the market or you could pick up the Hercules DJ Console RMX (my personal favourite) which is slightly cheaper than the VCi-100, but just as good IMHO.
If you prowled the forums for a “versus” thread, the VCi-100 will tend to be the more preferred unit of the two, so I would suggest you pick it up if you can afford it. These two both come with Traktor’s DJ software, one of the best DJing softwares in the market, and they are ready to use right out of the box with most DJing software options.
If you have an UBER old PC with an old soundcard, the VCI-100 with demand a little more from your system than the other 2 units, so you might want to consider picking up a better soundcard for it (if you’re a serious DJ doing big gigs then you must find a good external soundcard, with more than one headphone jack.)
The last nessecity would be the speakers:
Usually your s****y pc speakers will be ok for practicing, but, If you are planning on doing any parties or venue gigs you will want to pick up some active (which means they have built in amplifiers) PA speakers for small venues or an amp and some passive speakers for large venues.
If you are already doing large venues though I suppose you won’t really need me to tell you what speakers to use.

For Sound Card(s): Select your Serato SL1 (Personally I downloaded and use ASIO4ALL – it’s free and compatible with most USB sound cards)

Usually, the mixer has a lineout separate from the master. The masters are for the speakers; lineout is USUALLY for alternate outputs, such as booth monitors.
You will need an RCA cable as well, with one end being split into the red and white plugs(this end is plugged into the mixer) and the other end being a single jack. Remember, you will need different plugs and adapters depending on what you are connecting, but the most part, a standard RCA cable will do fine at your local Radio Shack.
The single end will likely go into one of two ports: the mic or line in. Most computers these days(especially those with dedicated audio hardware, such as a sound card) have a line in port. If you don’t have a line in, use your mic port.
Next, set up Audacity so that the line in or mic option is selected for recording(depending on what port you used). This will route the incoming signal from the mixer to Audacity and record.
Press play on your equipment, and hit record. Audacity should pick it up, and you should be recording in no time.
A few pointers:
1.If you are having trouble hearing your recordings:
-Try adjusting the system and Audacity’s volume to compensate and balance. Remember, if you are using the mic port, you will have to adjust the system volume(control panel-audio hardware, volume control in task bar) and set it properly so that it won’t record too loudly or too soft.
-Try increasing the volume on your computer. I know this sounds stupid, but alot of programs by default have live monitoring on, which can be annoying when you are trying to record a set live. You might have lowered the volume in the process of setting up…
2. If you are not able to record at all:
-Make sure the proper inputs are selected BOTH in the system volume controls and Audition’s preferences. If you are using port x, then both port x on the system volume and Audition have to be selected for use.
-Make sure that the line in cable is properly plugged in both the mixer and the computer. You’ll be amazed and dumbfounded how many problems you can fix by simply correcting connections

I heard this tiny 35 watt amplifier with what looked like light bulbs and tiny fuses with coils and little knobs.Literly looked like a ciruit bored on top of a box! lol When the music would play the bulbs would lightly lite up!It produced the most warm rich and natural sounds I have ever heard in my life! Personally, I’d pass, especially knowing what so many DJ systems sound like.
This is an example of electronics before transistors miniaturized everything.
Don’t be fooled by the small watt rating, Tubes handle a LOT of power (touch the wrong lead when grounded and youre dead). Many people love the warm smooth sound tube amps give.
It is easy to design an amp with tons of rated power, but it will sound like crap.
A well designed and built amp with with modest power rating will play loud enough to get the cops to the door and sound good at the same time.
I had a 90 watt amp that I drove a set of electrostatic speakers(notoriously power hungry) just fine.
Amplifiers are on the surface, very simple devices, it’s easy to design and built them to extreme power levels, much harder to get them to sound good at any power level.
It is easy to find high quality amps for sale on Ebay or Audiogon or other similar sites.
That 3K amp is a Public Address Amplifier, not suitable for music or HT.
Need to be able to save the songs as an MP3, increase and decrease individual clip volumes, cut portions of audio out, and simple to use. Most of all simple to use.
Idk anything bout mixing songs, and got no money to purchase a program. Doesn’t need to sound pro, just needs to work.

Connect the headphone output of the PC to the speaker inputs with that cable.
The midi controller will connect with a USB cable.
You don’t need the Numark I/O but that is a nice unit anyway.
By the way, your soundcard is stereo so it is two channels – right and left.

Now I fear that if I do return the item, he will pretend that it’s not the one he sent me and will refuse to refund. Because he is clearly untrustworthy, I have left him negative feedback (he has 16% negative!) and filed an amazon claim. I explained all of the above in the claim.

As to the threat to go to the police-there is nothing the police could (or would) do-how would the seller prove your returned item was not the one sent to you? Anyways the police would not get involved in such matters. If they would (and they don’t) get involved in such situations-they would prosecute the seller for falsely claiming the product was new.

fmil made me make fsil a bm before she got pregnant(fsil married fh’s brother in early 2008; they got preg. in jan. ’09), then kept trying to get me to cater everything to fsil’s preferences & get fsil a totally different dress from the other 3 bms(i have no moh & she certainly isnt in the running for it b/c i am closer to my other bm’s than her, not to mention she doesnt put forth effort unless it somehow works out for her) . now that fsil is preg. & fmil is even more about fsil, fsil, fsil. she ignores me completely and complains about every penny she has to spend when SHE is the reason we are over budget, NOT ME. SHE had to have the expensive caterer that made the food SHE liked. SHE had to have the dj SHE liked(even though our hall came w/ FREE use of the ambient sound system and a microphone). and it isnt like i havent spent my own money on this wedding either. i spent pretty much all of the small amount of money i had($ 1000+) on this wedding.
fmil from the beginning acted(& still acts) like fsil is my only bm. fsil is an abismal bm; she got mad b/c the other bm’s couldnt go shopping for food when she could, so she went out, intentionally overbought a bunch of food w/ fmil’s money, & charged my other bm’s for a 3rd of it each. then used the extra food plus what was left from the shower for fbil’s party the next day. she also didnt send out shower or hen night invites until 5 or 6 days before so no one would show up. she emailed me last week to say ” hey i need a new dress”- she doesnt-the bm’s dresses were picked & sized w/ her preg. in mind. she then said to me ” it doesnt matter if i am wearing a completely different dress the dress would look like a different one any way b/c im pregnant-ummm…no it wouldnt. it would match the other girls, & just b/c you can procreate randomly doesnt mean the universe revolves around you. fh & i have had 2 children, one of whom passed away, & both times i was pregnant, fmil treated me harshly. she made me ride in extremely hot cars w/o ac in 100-120 degree summers thru both pregnancies, cussed me out at least twice over nothing, & did her level best to split fh & i up.
i have tried to talk to fh about all of this. he doesnt care & says that we will get married on our original date. he wont marry me before in a separate ceremony to save the stress(our friend is marrying us & is freaking out about it, & i dont want him to show up on his anti-anxiety meds b/c it would make our service invalid). at this point, i am about a fingernails width from calling it all off. im not even excited about my own wedding any more. i dont want to have anything where his mother or sil are involved or present.
on top of all of this, fmil & co.(ffil, fsil, & fbil)are all going on vacations for the rest of the weekends until the wedding. & leaving us w/ fgmil(dementia, fecal & urine incontinent, aphasia- all of these are present in her case). they all work during the week, then stay gone until it’s time for bed, then come home & get up & leave before i, fh, or fgmil get up in the morning.
fmil & fsil have made this wedding all about THEM, not fh, our child & i. i have not been allowed to make more than about 3 decisions, & i had to FIGHT to get those few. she is trying to make me & my son spend the night before my wedding in a house w/ 3 cats(my child & i both are allergic;allergy meds help, but i still have red eyes, a headache, & a runny nose & my child has a skin condition that is aggrivated by cat hair & dander in addition to standard allergy symptoms.) & a dog who is notorious for destroying things.

Your best bet would be to hit up a thrift store and to search for any 80′s turntables. Some brands to look for are Dual, Stanton, Technics and even Phillips made some decent quality turntables.
You should be able to find an excellent turntable for around or under $ 30. Outfit it with a new needle (lets say $ 40) and you have a great turntable and new stylus for $ 70, rather than buying a crappy crosley for the same price.

Like a couple of other people have mentioned, it’s all about the software you use. There’s software you can get where you can experiment with adding effects to music, scratching music on the computer and even saving music files that you have added effects to! There’s one piece of software that my friend uses that is called “virtual dj”, you can download a free trial of the software as far as I know. Remember, like a lot of things it’s about practice and being open to new things like using new effects. If you wanted to take it further, look at buying one digital turntable for around £300 (may take some saving so see if you can rent one from a store or use a friends to try it out) Hope this helped I currently use 2 vinyl decks, a 9″ mixer, and a PA to bring it to life. I have Stantons, T.60 turntables and M.201 mixer. I think I am ready to upgrade. I am tired of buying 10 dollar vinyl, carrying it around, and keeping it clean. I think that I am going to switch all out to digital.
I am thinking about the Cortex dMix 300 to be the basis of my DJing right now. Its a nice unit, 19″ long with a built in mixer. Easy stow and go. Therefore, I can sell my mixer and PA for some money (which I kinda need right now). And if i must, my T.60′s as well.
Now, if I go digital, I might need one of these DJ interfaces like Serato Scratch Live, Traktor DJ, Deckadance, or whatever. I want to go for something that is affordable for me right now ($ 200-$ 400) and that I will be able to get some use out of. Thing is, I dont know everything about these interfaces. If I DJ live,

Dont get me wrong, I LOVE electronica music (tiesto, deadmau5, daft punk, benassi, etc) and plan to go to EDC in LA later this month… but I’ve always been curious. Can anyone explain else this to me? DJing looks too easy to the eye.
1) They go to show respect to the DJ they love, even though the DJ isn’t playing live, they mixed the song originally and people want to pay them respect.
2) Concerts are fun to be at. Even if you don’t give a shit about the DJ you are still going to have a good time especially if you are there with your friends.
3) Some DJ’s actually do live mixes that are unique to their shows.
Now while being a bad DJ is easy… being a good DJ is quite difficult. If you want to DJ at clubs you have to have a natural talent of being able to mentally line up different tracks and use this skill to mix the tracks together. Sure it may sound easy but to do it well so that music keeps on pumping all night long is a quite different story.

If you just want to match up music, you can get any cheap digital turntable – plenty of them (although toy quality) are under 350.
If you want to get into turntablism, its another story. You will want vinyl since its actually easier than digital turntablism. Then, move into the digital aspect. You could start that with a $ 150 turntable and $ 20 in sample records and a cheap $ 100 mixer. A beginners setup yes, but you are just getting into it.
Remember, with digital, there is latency – the delay of the act to the computer. You can spend 500 alone on a soundcard w midi that reduces latency. Digital turntables can hold ‘timecode’ audio that is run into your computer. The timecode sounds like noise, but its really data. The computer hears that scratched data, and in return, scratches the audio digitally on your computer. Not something for me personally, but it is a interesting thing nonetheless.
